Capers Island and the barrier islands
Capers Island, north of Isle of Palms, is a state heritage preserve reachable only by boat. Its beach is known for weathered trees along the shoreline, and it's a favorite stop for longer trips. Rules for visiting protected islands apply, and your captain will know them.
Dewees Island, between Isle of Palms and Capers, is a private residential island, so boats pass by rather than stopping.
Calmer water on the waterway
The Intracoastal Waterway behind Isle of Palms is usually calmer than the open harbor, which makes it a good choice for families and anyone who gets seasick easily.
A note on inlets
Breach Inlet, between Isle of Palms and Sullivan's Island, has strong currents and is dangerous for swimming. Local captains know where it's safe to anchor and swim, so follow their lead.
