A booze cruise in Charleston almost always means a private BYOB charter rather than a boat with a bar. That gives your group control over what you drink, but it also means knowing the rules before you show up with three coolers.
How BYOB charters work
Your group brings drinks and the operator provides the boat and a sober, licensed captain. Guests who drink must be 21 or older. Operators set their own rules, and the captain has final say on board.
What's usually allowed

- Cans and plastic only, no glass
- Beer, wine and seltzers allowed, liquor sometimes restricted
- Limits on the number or size of coolers

How much to bring

Heat, sun and alcohol together hit harder on a boat. Eat before you board, drink water between drinks, and stay in the shade when you can. If the captain allows swimming, stay close to the boat and take currents seriously. Charleston's tidal currents are strong.
If someone in your group plans to rent a boat and drive it themselves, that person can't drink. Boating under the influence is illegal and dangerous. A captained charter avoids the problem entirely.
Etiquette that keeps captains happy
Show up on time, keep trash in bags, respect the volume near docks and neighborhoods, and tip the captain. Groups that are easy to work with tend to get the best stops.
