Both Shem Creek and downtown Charleston put you on the harbor quickly, so you'll see many of the same sights either way. The real differences are the atmosphere at the dock, how easy it is to get there and what you want to do before and after.
Shem Creek: lively and laid-back
Shem Creek has a fun, busy dock scene with shrimp boats, restaurant decks and pelicans. It's a natural pick for bachelorette groups and anyone staying in Mount Pleasant, Sullivan's Island or Isle of Palms. Weekend parking is tight, so plan on rideshare.
Downtown: convenient and central
Downtown marinas are the easy choice if you're staying on the peninsula. You can pair the boat with dinner on King Street, and several larger vessels are based downtown, which helps for weddings and corporate groups. Parking is usually in garages, so check options ahead of time.
Views and routes
From downtown you start with the Battery and Waterfront Park. From Shem Creek you start with the creek and Crab Bank, then head out toward Fort Sumter, Sullivan's Island or Patriots Point. Either way, most harbor routes overlap.
