The Best Places to Cruise in Charleston Harbor

Charleston Harbor is compact enough that a two-hour trip can cover most of its highlights. Use this as a wish list to share with your captain, who will build a route around the tide, the wind and your time on the water.
The Battery and Waterfront Park
The seawall promenade at the tip of the peninsula, lined with historic homes and White Point Garden, is Charleston's classic skyline view. Just north, Waterfront Park and its pineapple fountain sit along the Cooper River side.
Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie
Fort Sumter sits on its own island at the harbor mouth, where the first shots of the Civil War were fired. Across the channel on Sullivan's Island is Fort Moultrie. Private charters cruise past the forts; visiting Fort Sumter itself is done by the authorized ferry.
Castle Pinckney
This small fortification on Shutes Folly Island sits in the middle of the harbor between downtown and Mount Pleasant. It's closed to visitors but easy to see from the water.
Patriots Point and the Ravenel Bridge
The aircraft carrier USS Yorktown is moored at Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant. Upriver, the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, with its diamond-shaped towers, is one of the most photographed sights in the area, and it's lit up after dark.
Shem Creek and Crab Bank
Shem Creek, with its shrimp boats and waterfront restaurants, is worth a slow pass even if you don't start there. Crab Bank, at the creek's mouth, is a protected seabird nesting island. Boats keep their distance.
Beyond the harbor
Longer trips can reach the Morris Island Lighthouse, sandbars that appear at low tide, or the quieter rivers upstream. These add time, so book three hours or more if they're on your list.
